The first guidebook publisher I worked for was Rough Guides in 1997 who hired me to update the peninsula Malaysia chapters of the second edition of The Rough Guide to Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei. The following year I travelled around Japan, where I’d lived between 1991 and 1994, working as an editor and writer: my assignment was to craft the first editions of The Rough Guide to Japan and Rough Guide to Tokyo with co-author Jan Dodd.
The Japan guide won Travelex Guidebook of the Year in 2000 and both guides were recognised by the Japan Festival Fund for their “outstanding achievement in furthering the understanding of Japanese culture”.
June 2009 saw the publication of my The Rough Guide to Anime, an introduction to the dynamic world Japanese animation. I also contributed to The Rough Guide to Manga and Rough Guide’s Make The Most of Your Time on Earth.
